Stevens Point, WI (December 29, 2015) – The Portage County Board of Supervisors has completed the initial background information phase of its County-wide Farmland Preservation Plan. This document, required for all counties by the State of Wisconsin, is intended to contain information describing the County’s agriculture industry and, in accordance with State requirements, …”state the county’s policy related to farmland preservation and agricultural development, including the development of enterprises related to agriculture.”
An Ad Hoc Steering Committee, appointed by the County Board, has been working throughout 2015 to assemble background information describing local agriculture. The results will be presented at this Community Discussion Event to be held January 6, 2016 at the @1800 Theatre (Sentry Theatre), 1800 Northpoint Drive, Stevens Point.
An Open House will be held at 5:00 pm in the Theatre lobby. For one hour, residents can explore displays describing the planning process to-date, facts and preliminary trends in agriculture identified through the Ad Hoc Committee discussions, and engage with Ad Hoc Committee members.
The main event, a panel discussion, will begin promptly at 6:00 pm in the Theatre.

There hasn’t been a meeting like this in Portage County for quite some time… It’s a great opportunity for residents to come out, learn about a very important piece of Portage County’s economy, historic culture, and be able to ask whatever questions you might have about agriculture from people involved in it every day. Not to mention you will be able to have direct input into how the County develops its public policy.
We hope a lot of people come out!
The updated draft of the Farmland Preservation Plan document will be posted to this blog within the next few days…stay tuned…
