At their April 18, 2016 meeting, the Portage County Farmland Preservation Ad-Hoc Steering Committee concluded their work on preparing the initial complete draft of the Portage County Farmland Preservation Plan, and made a motion to formally recommend the draft to the Portage County Planning and Zoning Committee for additional review and ultimately a public hearing before making their own formal recommendation to the full County Board for consideration.

Part of the recommendation by the Ad Hoc Committee was to have the Portage County Land and Water Conservation and Agriculture and Extension Education Committees join Planning and Zoning in a joint review and recommendation of the draft. The Plan was received by the Planning and Zoning Committee on May 24, 2016, and a joint meeting of the Committees will be scheduled in the second half of June. Please check back to this blog for details as they become available.

Below you will find links to the Plan document, as well as the draft minutes from the Ad Hoc Committee meeting.

COMMUNITY EVENT WRAP-UP

The Community Discussion on Portage County Agriculture and Food System was held in the Sentry Theater on January 6, 2016. Over 70 people attended and mingled through approximately 40 poster boards of information and statistics from the draft Portage County Farmland Preservation Plan that were displayed in the theater lobby. There was a lot of good discussion!

The panel discussion, which was scheduled for 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the theater, ended up continuing until approximately 8:45 pm. Lots of great comments and discussion from a variety of perspectives: agriculture operations big to small; from private industry to local government education and resource management, to a more regional research perspective. There were questions and comments from the audience as well. To those people who had to leave before it was done, our apologies for running over the scheduled time!

Luckily, the panel discussion was recorded, and is scheduled to play on Community TV, channel 984, at the following times:

  • Friday, January 22 at 8:00 pm
  • Saturday, January 23 at 1:30 and 9:00 pm
  • Monday, January 25 at 7:00 pm

We will also be providing a link to the video in a future blog post, so look for that…

Below you will find links to several of the Boards from the January 6th meeting that were not part of the Plan draft (which is linked in the December 31, 2015 blog post).

The Rural Vision Statement link is intended to help residents get a feel and better understanding for how the Portage County Board of Supervisors approached overall vision and goal/policy setting during its Comprehensive Plan adoption process from 2002 – 2006. The “Existing Portage County…” link details agriculture-related statements from throughout the County’s Comprehensive Plan, and serves as the starting place for the next phase of the current Farmland Preservation planning process.

The Portage County Farmland Preservation Ad Hoc Steering Committee will be meeting later in January, at a place and time to be determined, to continue their discussion of agriculture issues and recommendations. Check back for the meeting announcement…
